Currently is has become pretty easy over the last few years to have your own website. Hosting sites such as does offer free hosting and great templates with graphical user interface panel which basically allows anyone who is not that internet savy to create a basic website.

It is necessary in the sense it you are interested in getting additional information about yourself or business out there. For example, if you had some one who wanted to get access to some business or service you offered, whether it is just to find out more information about your offer wouldn't it be good to simple send them to your website to get this details?

That said, there are several other benefits to having your own website but it is a great means of exposure to get your business to the masses.

It does help you build an online identity and people could easily google your name. Mine usually is just an abandoned blog, which I may transform into a CV in the future.

I believe it's important to have your own website to be able to promote whatever it is that you're selling or offering. If you have products on a large website like I do. (Zazzle) your products can get buried so to speak as there are so many designers and shops. If you create your own website then you can freely market your own products, build your online identity and have a much better chance of customers finding your products.

You really don't absolutely have to have your own website but why wouldn't you? I mean web hosting and domains are cheap nowadays and creating a simple WordPress based site is easier than ever, especially with all the great free marketing plugins out there. Having your own website can help you extend your reach, boost your credibility and provide you will all kinds of possibilities for communication and creativity.

If you happen to choose not to start with your own site you really must have some way to capture leads and build a list. Without that ability you have no way to contact and follow up with anyone. And NEVER rely on some company/program provided replicated site for your business, they have zero uniqueness. Also, don't use a Facebook page as a replacement for a real website, they just aren't the same and using that alone with make you look cheap IMO (use Facebook pages as a supplement to direct people to your personal website or blog).

These days, creating a personal website is pretty easy. You don’t need to know about web hosting or code—the newest kids on the block are hosted profile pages with templates you can fill in with photos, links, and text about yourself. You don’t even have to have tons of content for subpages—just one landing page is all you need to stake out your spot on the web.

So, it’s easy, but is it necessary?

If you’re a media, digital, or creative professional—absolutely. Same goes if you want to otherwise establish yourself as an expert in anything and don’t already have your own professional blog. If you’re in a traditionally non-creative field with structured recruitment and hiring methods, such as accounting or law, a personal website might not help you as much professionally. But if you have a side hustle or hobby and you’re active in the online community, then a personal site can be helpful to grow that online influence, too.
