I hear your concern and commend you for asking this question. Like you, I wouldn't be involved in anything of the sort, because pyramid schemes are illegal.

The business we're discussing actually has valuable products and services that meets the demand of the marketplace.

And in my professional experience, needs-based industries are the perfect place to be in business, because everyone needs and uses the products and services habitually without thinking twice about it.

Let's have a look together. There's nothing wrong with an informed decision, right?

I approach in the similar style goosed7 would. I usually say something like,"You say that like it is a bad thing" =)...What has been your experience with Pyramids?

Now if you mean like the illegal kind, I am like you, I have no desire to be part of that. If you mean like legendary Coach John Woodens world renowned Pyramid of Success...well yeah, it is like that. A proven  system of moral and ethical  strategies used by successful leaders and iconic people in their chosen fields.

How about we sit down and check it out together? It may or may not be for you, though if it is not, we are still good right? And if it is, know I am with you every step of the way, we would be "partners" growing our business together.

here, let me show show you what is possible...

I'd start by getting a frame of reference on the questioner's premise.

In other words, what does he/she think a pyramid scheme is?

I'd then refer him/her to the Better Business Bureau blog entry dated 2 Mar 2015 that defines the difference:

http://www.bbb.org/phoenix/news-events/consumer-tips/2015/03/opportunity-or-scam-multi-level-marketing-vs.-pyramid-schemes/

"MLM is a system of retailing in which consumer products are sold by independent salespeople (distributors). Earnings in MLM are based on effort and ability to sell consumer products supplied to the distributor by the company ... Pyramid schemes concentrate mainly on making quick profits earned by selling the right to recruit others. Pyramid schemes focus more on recruiting other participants than selling the product or service, making little to no mention about the market for the item."

I'd then refer him/her back to the system in question and jointly review it.

Great reference Kjell thank you.  That is how a few companies have gotten into trouble recently because they were pushing recruiting all the time.

This is a  good question ! It freezes up a lot of people especially when you are just starting out in the industry. But it is a simpler question to handle as you grow up  and get better in marketing.

Here are the few responses:

  1. You can answer their question,by asking a question to clarify what they mean. For instance...you could say... "When you ask Is this a pyramid scheme? can i ask what you mean?
  2. "Were you ever in network marketing? Tell me your story and i will share mine."

Prospect's answers have nothing to do with you,it's about them.So don't judge or be worried, because you might not know their story or how they are really feeling.Ours is not a convincing business,it's a sharing business.
